What to Expect in Your First Reiki Session: A Beginner's Complete Guide
If you feel called to Reiki but also a little nervous, you are in exactly the right place. I’m Carol Reinlie of Aligned Soul Magic in Roswell, GA, and in this gentle Reiki session guide, I’ll walk you through what to expect in Reiki session step by step, so your first Reiki session can feel calm, safe, and even a little magical.
What Is Reiki, in Simple, Everyday Language?
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or just-above-the-body) healing practice that works with universal life force energy—the same subtle energy that animates nature, your breath, and your inner spark. Think of it as a soothing current of light that helps your body, mind, and spirit remember how to relax and rebalance themselves.
Reiki is non-invasive. You stay fully clothed. There are no manipulations, no pressure, and nothing you have to “do right.” I’m not forcing energy into you or taking anything away. Instead, I act as a channel, allowing this universal energy to flow where it’s needed most, supporting your own natural healing wisdom. For Reiki for beginners, this often feels surprisingly gentle, yet deeply nurturing.
How to Prepare for Your First Reiki Session
What to Wear
Comfort is key. Wear loose, soft clothing you can easily relax in—yoga pants, sweatpants, a cozy top, or anything that doesn’t pinch or bind. You’ll be lying on a padded table, similar to a massage table, fully clothed. You can keep on socks and jewelry if they feel comfortable, and we can always adjust pillows and blankets so you feel fully supported and warm.
What (and When) to Eat Before Your Session
It’s best to arrive neither stuffed nor starving. A light meal or snack an hour or two beforehand is perfect. Choose nourishing foods—think salads, soups, fruit, or simple grains—and go easy on caffeine, alcohol, or heavy, greasy meals. Your body will be able to relax more deeply when it isn’t working overtime to digest or wired from stimulants.
Setting a Gentle Intention
Before you arrive, take a few moments to ask yourself: “What do I most need support with right now?” It might be stress relief, better sleep, emotional healing, clarity around a life decision, or simply, “I want to feel more like myself again.” Your intention doesn’t have to be perfect. Just a simple, heartfelt phrase such as “I’m open to receiving whatever is for my highest good” is beautiful. I’ll also help you clarify this during our intake conversation.
Step-by-Step: What Happens During Your Reiki Session
1. A Warm Intake Conversation
When you arrive at my healing space in Roswell, GA, we’ll start with a relaxed conversation. I’ll ask about what brought you to Reiki healing Roswell GA, your health history, and what you’re hoping to experience. This is also the perfect time to share any worries—like “What if I don’t feel anything?” or “What if I fall asleep?”—so I can reassure you and answer questions. This is your time, and you’re always in charge of your comfort and boundaries.
2. Getting Comfortable on the Table
Next, you’ll lie down fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table. I’ll offer blankets and pillows to support your head, knees, or lower back. Soft music may be playing, and the lights are usually dimmed to create a peaceful, cocoon-like feeling. You can close your eyes, or keep them gently open—whatever feels safest to you.
3. Hand Positions and Energy Flow
Once you’re settled, I’ll begin the Reiki. I place my hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your body—such as your head, shoulders, abdomen, knees, and feet—moving in a sequence that supports your whole system. If there’s anywhere you’d prefer I avoid, we’ll honor that completely. Many clients say it feels like being wrapped in a soft, loving blanket of light from the inside out.
4. Sensations You Might (or Might Not) Feel—All Are Normal
During your first Reiki session, you might notice:
- Gentle warmth or even heat in certain areas
- Tingling, pulsing, or subtle waves of energy moving through you
- A sense of deep peace, floating, or heaviness as your body relaxes
- Emotional releases—such as tears, sighs, or waves of relief—without a clear story attached
- Or, sometimes, nothing noticeable at all in the moment
Every one of these experiences is completely normal. Some people feel very little during the session but notice big shifts in the hours or days afterward—better sleep, calmer reactions, or sudden clarity. Reiki is working whether or not your mind can track it in real time.
After Your Session: Integration, Water, and Possible Healing Waves
When the session is complete, I’ll gently let you know and give you a few moments to come back into the room. We’ll chat about anything you noticed, and I may share intuitive impressions or areas where the energy felt especially active. You never have to share more than you want to; your process is always honored and held with confidentiality and care.
Drinking plenty of water over the next day or two helps your body integrate the energetic shifts. You may feel very relaxed, sleepy, or unusually peaceful—if you can, give yourself space for gentle rest, a walk in nature, or quiet time that evening. This integration period is part of the healing, not separate from it.
Occasionally, people experience what’s sometimes called a mild healing crisis: old emotions bubbling up, vivid dreams, or temporary tiredness as your system clears out what is no longer needed. This usually passes quickly and often leads to feeling lighter and clearer. If anything feels confusing or intense, you can always reach out—I’m here to support you through the process.
Common Reiki Benefits My Clients Notice
- Profound stress relief and a sense of calm they haven’t felt in years
- Better sleep and fewer racing thoughts at bedtime
- Gentle emotional release of grief, anxiety, or old patterns
- Increased clarity and intuition around relationships, work, and life choices
- Reduction in physical pain or tension, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back
Everyone’s journey is unique, but over and over, clients tell me they feel more like themselves—more grounded, hopeful, and connected. These are some of the most beautiful Reiki benefits to witness.
How Many Reiki Sessions Are Typically Recommended?
One session can absolutely be supportive, especially if you’re curious and just want to experience what to expect in Reiki session for yourself. For deeper patterns—long-term stress, chronic pain, or big life transitions—I often recommend starting with a series of three to four sessions, spaced about a week or two apart. This gives your system time to unwind layer by layer, rather than trying to shift everything at once.
After that, many people choose monthly or seasonal tune-ups to stay balanced, much like you might schedule regular massages or therapy sessions. We’ll always talk together about what feels right for your body, your schedule, and your budget.
Solo Reiki Session vs. Learning Reiki Level 1 Yourself
Receiving a solo Reiki session with me in Roswell is like being lovingly held in a healing container. You simply show up, relax, and receive. This is wonderful when you’re feeling depleted, overwhelmed, or in need of deep support. It’s also the perfect way for Reiki for beginners to gently explore energy healing without any pressure to “do” anything.
Learning Reiki Level 1, on the other hand, is like being handed your own personal toolkit for life. In my Level 1 classes here in Roswell, GA, you receive attunements that open you to channel Reiki for yourself, your loved ones, and even pets and plants. You learn hand positions, self-care practices, and ways to use Reiki in everyday situations—before sleep, during stressful days, or when your heart needs extra tenderness.
If you feel a nudge to go deeper, I’d love to welcome you into one of my upcoming Reiki Level 1 classes in Roswell on August 8 and September 12. These are intimate, heart-centered days where you’ll not only learn Reiki, but also connect with a supportive community on the same path of healing and awakening.
