You've probably heard the word "chakra" — but what does it actually mean? And more importantly, what do your chakras have to do with the anxiety you can't shake, the relationship pattern you can't break, or the physical symptoms your doctor can't explain?
As an energy healer and integrative healing practitioner in Roswell, GA, I work with the chakra system every day. Understanding your chakras is one of the most practical and empowering frameworks I know for making sense of why you feel the way you feel — and what to do about it.
What Are Chakras?
The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit and means "wheel" or "disk." In ancient Indian philosophy and healing traditions, chakras are spinning vortices of energy located along the central channel of the body. These energy centers receive, process, and distribute life force energy (called prana, chi, or qi depending on the tradition) throughout the physical body and the surrounding energy field (aura).
Most Western healing traditions work with seven primary chakras, though some systems recognize dozens more. Each major chakra corresponds to specific physical organs and systems, emotional themes, psychological patterns, and spiritual capacities. When a chakra is balanced and flowing freely, the corresponding areas of life tend to reflect health, harmony, and ease. When a chakra is overactive, underactive, or blocked, the imbalance shows up — often loudly — in the body, emotions, relationships, or circumstances of life.
The Seven Major Chakras
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara) — Base of the Spine
Color: Red | Element: Earth | Themes: Safety, survival, belonging, physical health, financial security
The root chakra is your foundation. When balanced, you feel safe, grounded, and secure — connected to the earth and to your body. Imbalances here often manifest as chronic anxiety, financial struggle, health issues in the legs or lower back, and a persistent feeling that the world isn't safe.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) — Lower Abdomen
Color: Orange | Element: Water | Themes: Creativity, pleasure, emotion, sexuality, relationship
The sacral chakra governs your capacity for joy, creativity, and authentic emotional expression. Imbalances appear as creative blocks, difficulty experiencing pleasure, emotional numbness or volatility, reproductive issues, and challenges with intimacy.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) — Upper Abdomen
Color: Yellow | Element: Fire | Themes: Personal power, will, confidence, identity, self-worth
This is your power center — the seat of personal authority and self-definition. Imbalances show up as low self-esteem, difficulty setting boundaries, people-pleasing, digestive issues, and a chronic feeling of powerlessness.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata) — Center of the Chest
Color: Green (and pink) | Element: Air | Themes: Love, compassion, connection, forgiveness, grief
The heart chakra bridges the lower (physical) and upper (spiritual) chakras. Imbalances manifest as inability to give or receive love, chronic loneliness, grief that won't shift, codependency, and physical issues in the heart and lungs.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) — Throat
Color: Blue | Element: Ether/Sound | Themes: Communication, truth, authentic expression, listening
The throat chakra governs your ability to speak your truth and be heard. Imbalances appear as difficulty speaking up, chronic throat issues, fear of judgment, overtalking or undertalking, and disconnection from your own truth.
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) — Between the Eyebrows
Color: Indigo | Element: Light | Themes: Intuition, perception, imagination, inner knowing
Your third eye is the seat of inner vision and intuitive wisdom. Imbalances appear as difficulty trusting intuition, overthinking, inability to visualize, headaches, and a sense of disconnection from higher guidance.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) — Top of the Head
Color: Violet/White | Element: Consciousness | Themes: Spiritual connection, divine guidance, unity, transcendence
The crown chakra connects you to your higher self and the divine. Imbalances show up as spiritual disconnection, cynicism, existential emptiness, and difficulty finding meaning or purpose.
How Chakra Imbalances Develop
Chakras become imbalanced through emotional wounding, unresolved trauma, chronic stress, limiting beliefs, and energetic interference from external sources. Early childhood experiences are particularly formative — a child who grew up in an unsafe environment will often carry a chronic root chakra imbalance into adulthood. An adult who suppresses authentic self-expression over years will typically develop throat chakra congestion.
Past life experiences also play a significant role. In my work combining chakra healing with past life regression, we regularly discover that deeply entrenched chakra imbalances have origins in previous lifetimes — particularly those involving persecution, betrayal, abandonment, or sudden loss.
How Chakra Healing Works
Professional chakra healing involves assessing the state of each chakra and applying targeted techniques to restore balance and flow. My approach at Aligned Soul Magic integrates several modalities:
- Reiki and energy healing: Channeling healing energy into blocked or depleted chakras
- Intuitive reading: Identifying the emotional and spiritual root cause of each imbalance
- Hypnotherapy: Accessing and healing the specific experiences or beliefs creating the block
- NLP: Reprogramming the limiting beliefs associated with each chakra imbalance
- Past life regression: When chakra wounds originate in previous lifetimes
Signs Your Chakras May Need Attention
- Chronic physical symptoms that resist conventional treatment
- Emotional patterns that repeat despite your best efforts to change them
- A persistent feeling of being stuck, blocked, or out of alignment
- Difficulty with specific life areas — finances, relationships, creativity, communication
- A sense that something is energetically "off" that you can't quite name
Working with Your Chakras
Chakra awareness is a lifelong practice, not a one-time fix. That said, professional energy healing can accelerate the process dramatically — clearing in a single session what might take years of solo practice to shift. I work with clients in person in the Roswell, GA area and virtually with clients around the world.
